Biography
Peruvian-Australian race car driver Kian Sargood’s journey on the track has been a testament to his resilience and determination to compete. Born in 2006, in Clermont, Florida, Kian’s fascination with being behind the wheel ignited at the age of 2. His passion for competition flourished through various sports until the age of 10, when he found his true calling in motorsport. Through sheer curiosity in 2017, Kian embarked on his racing career, joining an Arrive-n’-Drive series in the latter half of the season. Despite starting late, Kian’s talent shone brightly as he finished second overall, completing only half the races as his competitors. Building on this success throughout 2018 and 2019, he clinched victory in the latter season, amassing an impressive total of over 40 career wins. Despite financial hurdles, Kian pursued his dream, competing in the HRKC season with his own kart by 2020. Throughout challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kian consistently placed in the top 5 and secured podium finishes against multiple Canadian champions. However, despite his early successes, Kian faced setbacks when mechanical issues and financial constraints forced him to halt his racing endeavours in 2021 and 2022. Undeterred, he returned to the track in 2023, self-funded and more determined than ever. Demonstrating his unwavering skill and talent, Kian’s triumphant comeback showcased his ability to overcome life’s adversities with sheer resilience. For Kian, racing isn’t just about winning; it’s about striving to foster a sense of unity, sharing the exhilaration of motorsport and illustrating the boundless potential of one’s dreams among his own. His ultimate goal is to reach Formula 1 and proudly represent his countries on the world stage. Inspired by legendary legacies like Ayrton Senna, Kian is motivated to pursue his dreams and inspire others to chase theirs.
My Story
Since a young age, throughout my life, I have encountered and struggled against many challenges faced against me, starting even at the young age of 3, having to move countries from the US to Canada, and my parents’ divorce that followed two years after. From living in rented basements to not being able to afford appliances or clothing, my parents have gone through a great struggle to afford the luxuries I have available today. Of course, that didn’t come without a difficult childhood, including my poor hearing, having to overcome the challenges of my parents’ divorce and constantly being told I could never realize my dreams.
Racing, to me, was my escape. From the young age of 10, the adrenaline of speed carried out by the necessity of having to be present in that exact moment removed me from my busy life and allowed me to express myself fully in doing something that I thoroughly loved and enjoyed. When you’re driving a car at high speeds, everything around you slows, and life itself becomes the distraction for the one objective of winning.
By October of 2022—having missed two full seasons—I picked up a part-time job as a dishwasher, pushing myself to work up to 35 hours a week whenever possible. No matter if it was my birthdays or holidays, I was determined to fulfill the financial requirements to rejoin with my passion. Doing my best to take advantage of every opportunity given, I further studied small engines and competed in Skills Canada to further my knowledge on the mechanics behind my race-kart.
I was more than ever determined—no matter the cost—to achieve my goals, even against what many believed impossible and what many advised would be irresponsible. However, after many months of working and the countless nights of sleep I sacrificed to maintain both my high grades and the required amount of money, by April of 2023, I was once again financially stable for entry.
Although my struggles did not end there, with an old and damaged kart and a motor that hadn’t been used in years, I was faced with restrictions outside my own ability to provide good results that did not reflect my true potential. With the unfathomable amount of work required just to participate, and without rewarding results as a return, my motivation was challenged but I did not give up.
Finally, within the closing few races of the season, I had been rewarded by sheer coincidence. Kris Martin, a once deaf professional race car driver who’s competed at the top levels of NASCAR, Le Mans, and a 7-time Karting National Champion, had been watching me win against some of the most recognized drivers within the country in 2020, and upon reconnecting with me in 2023, he further decided to see how my talents have evolved throughout 2023.
Even against odds, I effectively demonstrated my talents consistently throughout the remainder of the season, up until the last race when it finally rained. Rain in motorsport allows for complete negligence in your engine’s performance and horsepower, as a driver’s skill is much more prevalent with the lack of grip caused by the water. Thus, after months of dedication, I was finally not held back by my engine and could show my true potential.
Not only did I nearly qualify first against the top drivers in North America—including the likes of Jordan Prior, 2-time North American Champion—but I was able to be consistently fastest throughout the race. The combination of my ability and dedication impressed Kris Martin enough to request me to drive for his new team, with a new world-class kart that I will be running with in 2024.
I am now a devoted member of the KMR (Kris Martin Racing) Team, and with his support, along with my unfaltering commitment, I am determined to make a name for myself and shock the world. Looking towards the future, I plan on running in 2-3 series next year, including the famous and well-documented Motormaster Ron Fellows Karting Competition, the Hamilton Regional Karting Club series, and the Motomaster Canadian Karting Championship.
Finally, within the years 2025 and 2026, I plan on introducing myself into the US Regional Formula 4 series so that one day my dream of reaching Formula 1 can be achieved. A journey that I would like to invite esteemed individuals like yourself to be on. I hope to not only inspire those around me with my story but also teach those that their upbringings and past do not define their odds of success.
